Got a family trip coming up, and I'm trying to map out the best route. I want to bring a firearm with me, but passing through New York State seems like a real headache. Skipping NY would really add to my drive time, so I'm torn. Has anyone navigated this before? What choices did you make? I'm open to any tips or suggestions to keep it straightforward.

FWIW, one of my sister's kids lives in California - when I drive out for a visit, I have a couple different options. One is a pump shotgun, that breaks down into a compact package. The other is a handgun that's compliant (revolver, or auto with 8-10 round mag). Either way, the firearm travels in a locked case, and the ammo has a separate locked case. And I also check for changes in that state's laws before I head that direction. Kind of a pain in the butt, but nobody needs legal headaches...
